Best Southeast Asia Cities for First-Time Digital Nomads

Cheap, warm, easy to land in, and full of other nomads to show you the ropes. The best places to start your Southeast Asia chapter.

Southeast Asia is where a huge share of nomads cut their teeth — your money goes furthest, the infrastructure is built for remote workers, and the community does half the onboarding for you.

FAQ

Should I start in Bali or Chiang Mai?
Both are classic first bases. Chiang Mai is cheaper, calmer and very walkable; Bali (Canggu) is pricier, more social and beach-side. See our head-to-head for the full breakdown.
Is Southeast Asia good for working US hours?
Not really — SE Asia is 11–15 hours ahead of US time zones, so it only works for fully asynchronous roles or night-owl schedules. For European hours it is a manageable 5–7 hour gap.
How much does it cost to live in Southeast Asia as a nomad?
Comfortable solo living runs roughly $1,000–1,400/month in the popular cities, with Chiang Mai and Penang at the cheaper end and Bali and Bangkok a bit higher.
