Ubud

Ubud is Bali's cultural and wellness core, set among rice terraces and jungle inland from the coast. It draws a calmer, more creative crowd than Canggu: yoga, art, plant-based cafes and meditation rather than beach clubs. There's a solid coworking scene and a community of long-stayers, makers and wellness types. It suits nomads who want a grounded, slower base over surf and nightlife.

On a United States passport working UTC−5 hours, Ubud is a harder sell than other options.
  • You get 30 days visa-free on a United States passport — fine for a first look, but you'll want the E33G Remote Worker KITAS to stay properly.
  • !At UTC+8, Ubud runs 13h ahead of your UTC−5 hours — near-opposite hours — only realistic if your job is fully asynchronous.
  • Budget around $1,300/mo to live well — mid-range for a comfortable solo setup.

Why nomads choose Ubud

The pace is gentler and the setting genuinely beautiful, with rice-field villa rentals at strong value. Coworking spaces like Outpost Ubud anchor a focused, creative community, and the wellness infrastructure (yoga, healthy food, retreats) is world-class. It's walkable by Bali standards, the air is fresher than the coast, and the cultural depth makes it rewarding for slow travel and creative work.

Where to stay in Ubud

Central Ubud / Penestanan
Walkable core near cafes, yoga studios and the famous Hubud coworking; lively but can get touristy.
Nyuh Kuning
Quiet village south of the Monkey Forest, popular with long-stay nomads wanting calm and rice-field views.
Sayan / Kedewatan
Greener, higher-end area west of town with river-valley villas and serious tranquility.

The honest downsides

It's inland, so no beach and a hot, humid jungle climate. Central Ubud gets clogged with day-tripping tourists and traffic, internet is as patchy as the rest of Bali, and nightlife is minimal. The wellness-heavy, sometimes precious atmosphere isn't for everyone, and you'll still need a scooter for anything beyond the centre.

Internet & coworking

Expect villa Wi-Fi around 20-50 Mbps with occasional drops; coworking spaces are more reliable and most nomads keep a Telkomsel SIM. As on the coast, build in redundancy and don't count on home internet for critical calls.

Getting set up

Find rice-field villas and rooms via Facebook groups and local agents, with big discounts for monthly stays. Get a Telkomsel SIM for backup data, rent a scooter (around $60-90 monthly), and ride cautiously on narrow roads. Coworking memberships double as instant community; try day passes at Outpost or other spaces first.

Ubud FAQ

Is Ubud good for digital nomads?
Yes, if you want a calmer, creative base over beach and party life. Ubud offers solid coworking, a strong wellness and arts community, beautiful rice-field villas and a slower pace. Drawbacks are tourist crowds in the centre, no beach, patchy internet and limited nightlife.
How much does it cost to live in Ubud per month?
Around $1,100-1,600 for a comfortable single. Villa rooms with pools run $400-650, coworking about $110, and healthy-cafe meals $4-8. Local warung food and a quieter village location like Nyuh Kuning keep costs lower; upscale Sayan villas push them higher.
Is Ubud or Canggu better for nomads?
Canggu suits surf, nightlife and a big social scene but has worse traffic; Ubud suits creatives and slow travel with yoga, nature and calm but no beach. Many nomads split time between the two. Choose Ubud for focus, Canggu for energy.
How fast is the internet in Ubud?
Comparable to the rest of Bali and unreliable for villas, often 20-50 Mbps with occasional outages. Coworking spaces provide faster, steadier connections, and a Telkomsel data SIM is a near-essential backup. Some newer villas now offer Starlink for better consistency.
